Montalcino – Wine & Olive Oil Tour
This day trip will bring you to the vineyards of Montalcino where you can discover the origin, the history and the tradition of one of Italians most famous and highly rated wines: The Brunello di Montalcino DOCG.
The tour brings you from the southern part of Montalcino, to the heart until the northern zone of the Brunello production. During this tour you will learn more about the characteristics of the different soil and climatic conditions that contributes to the unique character of this wine and you will also have the possibility to taste the warm and pleasant olive oil of this zone.
After your departure from Florence you pass by the rolling hills of the Chianti zone, the woods and valleys of the northern part of the Maremma until you reach Montenero d’Orcia at the southern borderline of the Val d’Orcia, heritage of the UNESCO, near the “Monte Amiata”. In this small Tuscan hamlet Claudia (associated of the Italian Association of Sommelier – A.I.S.) will welcome you and introduce you in the program and in the tastings of the day. Together you visit a renowned Frantoio and discover the secrets of their Olive Oil production. Of course, you have the possibility to taste three different olive oils.
Then, you go to the southern part of Montalcino in Sant’Angelo Scalo, where you visit a winery that has been converted to the organic wine production in 2013. It is the third biggest winery in Montalcino regarding the Brunello di Montalcino production and there you get a lot of information about the Sangiovese- Grosso- clone selection and the organic wine production. You taste three wines of the territory with the denominations: Sant’Antimo DOC, Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, as well as the their Extra Vergin Olive Oil.
After those visits you move closer to the center of Montalcino at 470m above sea level where a small family owned winery arranges a farmer light lunch for you. During lunch you have the possibility to taste their Sparkling Rosè, the Rosso di Montalcino DOC, their Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Selection and their Grappa.
After visiting the winery you stop by the center of Montalcino and you will have some time to have a digestive walk, to take a coffee or to make some shopping in the remarkable wine shops of the village.
Before we will end the tour you will move to the northern part of Montalcino, where an historic and unique winery is waiting for you. Only a staff of women manages the winery and during a small walk through the vineyards you can discover contemporary art. After the visit of the wine cellar you have the possibility to taste two of their wines and their Olive Oil Terre di Siena DOP.
At about 5pm you leave the winery to get back to Florence.
