Food Tour by Train in the Painter’s Valley
Return train tickets Milan – Domodossola
Return train tickets on a panoramic train from Domodossola to S. Maria Maggiore
Tasting of local street food and a glass of wine
Leave from Milan Central Train Station and, partly following the enchanting coastline of Lake Maggiore, reach Domodossola, a beautiful small town at the foot of the Alps with a Renaissance Market Square lined with palaces and 14th century arcades. Enjoy this lovely town sitting at a cafè and sipping a cappuccino or exploring the nearby alleyways. You cannot miss a stop at an artisan chocolate shop where you will be engulfed by the chocolate scent coming from the laboratory; a chat with the owner will be as satisfying as the shop sweet products.
After a tour of Domodossola, board the panoramic blue train that takes you on a scenic trip through the Painters’ Valley and its small villages. The valley casts a spell on its visitors at every time of the year; admire the intense green of the summer, the gold and red leaves in autumn, the white snowy landscape in winter and the thousand shades of spring blooms. Rural environments of pristine beauty combine with refined buildings in historic centres and little churches preserving frescoes of the local painters.
You will stop at Santa Maria Maggiore, the main village in the valley, for a unique gourmet experience; you will try first the local street food with a glass of wine and then you will have a typical meal at a restaurant in the centre. In the afternoon, you will explore the village small shops to discover crafts and local traditions. Visit the Chimney Sweep Museum or the House of Perfume celebrating the inventors of the world famous “Eau de Cologne” who were born here. Food enthusiasts will not be disappointed by a visit to one of the many food shops offering the best local products like the prosciutto Vigezzino or the local cheeses.
